Saboon Maazeh is a farm and workshop for soap-making preserving SWANA heritage in Chester, NY.
Saboon Maazeh is Arabic for soap from goats, and speaks to the origins of Joy’s soap making, which began while she was farming with goats in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Today, Joy farms in Chester and grows medicinal herbs (chamomile, sage, yarrow, calendula, etc.) to infuse in olive oil for soaps and salves, to dry for tea mixes, and also grows other Lebanese and Palestinian Heirlooms (mlukhiyye, fava beans, peas, kousa squash, grape leaves, etc.) to nourish her community and support the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library.
Joy is a trained soil chemist and microbiologist who focuses on traditional and agroecological farming and soap making methods, offering olive oil and laurel soaps (saboon baladi, saboon ghar), goat milk and tallow soaps, and other plant-based bars, using only natural colorants and essential oils. She hosts a seasonal soap CSA (community supported agriculture) following a soil to soap model and there are several pick up locations in NY and TX + shipping options. A percentage of all proceeds go to support food security efforts in Lebanon and Palestine.
